We acknowledge that the physical Westben Barn sits on the traditional territory of the Mississauga Ojibway, which includes neighbouring Alderville, Hiawatha and Curve Lake First Nations. We recognize that the idea of map making has historically been a violent and oppressive tool of colonization. We humbly hope to offer an alternative kind of digital map, one that highlights relations between people, sounds, landforms, landmarks and experiences. This map is not meant to represent an exclusionary property border — it’s meant to be learned and experienced; it’s flexible; it’s adaptable. To find out more about traditional indigenous nations, territories, languages and treaties on a global scale, please visit the community-sourced map: www.native-land.ca. Also, we invite you to visit and support Westben’s neighbors Alderville Black Oak Savanna, located on Alderville First Nation, just a few minutes from Westben; they preserve, restore and expand the largest intact tract of native grassland habitats in Central Ontario (a carbon sequestration powerhouse by the way) and provide important ecological research and educational group tours.
We sincerely hope you enjoy your experience at the Digital Venue. Be sure to let us know!
