La Memoria es un Tejido

La memoria es un tejido
Que va creciendo con el tiempo
Que nos va creando por dentro

La memoria es un tejido
Que se va rompiendo
Va doblando y dando forma
A la humanidad y la palabra

Al sentir en el silencio

La memoria es un tejido
que nos cubre como un manto
va formando piel y hueso
mente, oído, ritmo y canto

El tejido se deshace
Se desdobla y decolora
Se transforma y se remienda
Y ante todo se comparte

Es un vínculo infinito
Que como un hilo se enreda
En mares de momentos
En el océano del tiempo

¿Y si hilamos la memoria
Juntos como hermanos?
La pintamos como un cuadro
Y así contamos nuestra historia.

Memory is a cloth
That is growing over time
That is creating us inside

Memory is a cloth
That breaks
Folds and shapes
Humanity and words

The feeling in the silence

Memory is a cloth
That covers us like a cloak
It is forming skin and bones
Mind, ear, rhythm and song

The fabric unravels
Unfolds and discolors
It transforms and mends itself
And above all, it is shared

It is an infinite bond
That, like a thread, gets tangled
In seas of moments
In the ocean of time

And if we spin memory
Together like siblings?
Well paint it like a frame
And this way tell our story.

La Memoria es un Tejido is a multi media piece produced by Ellie Jakes, Rafael Luna, María Paula Vásquez Sepúlveda, and Smee Wong. This group of musicians from Oregon, California, and Bogotá, Colombia, gets together virtually at the Westben Performer-Composer Residency in June 2022. During their time at Westben, María composes the poem La Memoria es un Tejido, and each musician works on flute, piano, and vocal improvisations, producing synth sounds, field recordings, and visual arts. They aim to create a dreamy musical image to capture the memory of nature. The process of this ensemble is to convey collective activity, perceiving what shapes their individualities and history. Though it is a complete project, the different sections are unraveling transitions creating a sense of cognitive flow. La Memoria es un Tejido hopes to take the listeners on an immersive yet interactive journey about memory through one's mind(s) and nature as space or environment being part of history.
